The streak continues following swim meet with Tennessee
Georgia’s swimming and diving teams swept Tennessee on Senior Day Saturday afternoon, with the women winning 169-131, and the men winning 165-135.
Less than 24 hours after the Lady Bulldogs broke the school record for consecutive home wins, head coach Jack Bauerle said he couldn’t sleep as he stayed up all night thinking about Saturday’s meet.
“What we didn’t want to happen was to continue the streak and end it on the same weekend,” Bauerle said.
Saturday’s meet was the last dual meet of the season, so the win streak will remain intact until the next year’s campaign.
The scores were close after the first half of the meet and senior captain Peter Benner called a team meeting to pump up his teammates during the first intermission. After his pep talk, the Bulldogs came out firing on all cylinders and never slowed down.
Freshman Maddie Locus, who won twice on the day in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, set the school dual meet record with a 22.44 time in the 50 freestyle. She commented on Georgia’s ability to step up in clutch situations.
“I think Georgia is really good at coming together,” Locus said. “Tennessee is a really tough team and I think we really stepped it up.”
“I am so glad we beat Tennessee,” senior Michael Arnold said. “It’s close every year and it’s good to come in and swim as fast as we did and come out with the ‘W.’”
Georgia has 14 seniors on this year’s team and for all of them, this was the last time they swam competitively in Gabrielsen Natatorium.
Bauerle talked about the emotions surrounding the meet.
“It does hit ‘em because it’s not just the meets, it’s all the blood, sweat and tears they put into pool over four years,” he said.
Arnold spoke more personally about the emotions of being a senior.
“To say a cliché, it really hasn’t hit me yet kind of thing,” he said. “I’ll probably feel it more after SEC’s and NCAA’s than right now. It feels great to be a senior on this team and I’ve had a good time leading the guys this year.”
