Diamond Dogs ranked preseason No. 11

By on January 24, 2012

With the baseball season beginning in less than a month, Baseball America placed the Georgia Bulldogs at No. 11 in its preseason rankings.

“Preseason rankings are good to generate interest and a sign of respect for a program, and I think this will raise the expectations and accountability for our team,” Georgia head coach David Perno said. “We’re looking forward to the season and the outstanding support from the Bulldog fans at Foley Field.”

After producing three of the final four teams in last year’s College World Series — including eventual champion South Carolina — the SEC will again provide some of Georgia’s strongest opposition.

Six SEC teams are ranked in the top 25, with Florida, South Carolina and Arkansas in the top five. In addition to the SEC teams, Georgia will also play Georgia Tech, UCLA and Clemson.

The Bulldogs are also ranked No. 18 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll.

Last year’s Georgia team posted a 33-22 record and reached the NCAA Regional in Corvallis, Ore., but the team was not ranked in last year’s final Baseball America rankings.

Georgia begins its season on Feb. 17, welcoming Presbyterian (S.C.) to Athens for a three-game series.
