Gym Dogs post highest score of season, defeating LSU

By on January 28, 2012

The Georgia gymnastics team posted their highest score of the season with a score of 197.250 to the LSU’s 195.750.

The Gym Dogs (3-1, 2-1 SEC) hit all six routines on the floor exercise for the first time this season.

“It’s a sigh of relief,” said junior Shayla Worley. “Finally we translated what we did in practice out onto the competition floor.”

The No. 7 Gym Dogs started off the night strong on vault with junior Noel Couch’s sticking a Yurchenko full, earning her a 9.9.

“It’s always good to start strong because it gets that momentum going,” Couch said. “It gets the crowd into it and starting like that really carries you through the rest of the meet.”

The momentum continued on the event with senior Kat Ding’s near-perfect 9.925.

As the team moved onto the uneven bars, the momentum started to slow as Worley took a fall on her double layout dismount for a score of just 9.275.

“Shayla falling is a frustrating situation because she’s made the correction over and over and over again,” said Georgia head coach Jay Clark. “She gets to the end of the routine and for whatever reason she rushes to get through it because it’s not how she trains.”

But seniors Gina Nuccio and Ding followed with a 9.9 and 9.95, respectively, and allowed the Gym Dogs to drop the low score.

“My teammates had my back,” Worley said. “I’m glad it didn’t really affect us that much because I actually kind of tapped my foot on the low bar, so it kind of killed the swing.”

However, on the next event, Worley put her mistake behind her and posted a 9.925 for her beam routine.

“It’s always important when you have a mistake, to let it go and forget about it,” Worley said. “I just tried to do that and remember that I was on beam now.”

While the Gym Dogs posted a 148.0 through three events, the No. 17 Tigers (1-6, 1-2) had to count a couple of mishaps on bars and floor from sophomore Mckenzie Fox and freshman Reagan Courville.

Georgia moved on to its last event of the night — floor exercise — which had plagued it all season.

However, they didn’t let previous performances get in the way as they improved on their total by almost four whole tenths.

Nuccio was the star of the show, redeeming herself from her fall against Alabama, by scoring a 9.9 on the event.

Overall, Clark said he was happy but not satisfied after the team scored their highest score since their dual meet against UCLA in 2010.

“I saw a different little look in their eye,” Clark said. “I heard a little more energy in their voices today. I was optimistic that they would finally put all four together. That’s really what we would have scored in each of the first three meets so that’s about where I think we are.”

Although Georgia improved on their team score by over seven tenths, Clark still saw things they can improve on.

“Our No. 6 people on vault and floor fell into that trap of trying to be perfect when things are going well,” Clark said. “They tried to knock one out of the park. Noel went bigger than she’s ever gone and Cat Hires gets small and tried to stick a vault … just little things like that.”
