Gainesville State student suspected of reporting false attack at The Preserve

By on February 2, 2012

A 19 year-old Gainesville State student is a suspect in a filing a false report case after she called the police to report she had been attacked in her apartment on Monday.

When she called, she told officers the attacker had followed her into her apartment at the Preserve, tied her up, tore her shirt open and took pictures of her with a cell phone, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police report.

Officers arrived on the scene and cut tape that was still around her legs. They photographed her and the scene and the complainant was shaking visibly. Police gave her time to calm down before they asked her what happened.

Once she had calmed a little, “she volunteered that she had been ‘attacked’ in Charleston” the week before, according to the report. She had been in Charleston with her boyfriend, a University student, on a fraternity formal. She said she was leaving the hotel and realized she was being followed. She claimed she tried to run, but was caught and thrown against a wall. She “dropped some items but was able to get away,” according to the report. She told the officers she contacted Charleston police, was seen by EMTs, but chose not to report the incident.

When asked about the incident that had just occurred, she described her attacker wore a green shirt, blue jeans and a mask. She could not give “any further in reference to the build, race, or even sex of the suspect,” according to the report.

The student claimed she was followed into her apartment and was tied up with masking tape that was on a shelf near where she was found when the officers arrived, according to the report. She said she had been taped around the ankles and wrists. She also claimed that a rag on the floor had been shoved into her mouth.

The student said her attacker lit several matches from a box on the kitchen counter and threw them on her chest. She showed the officers burn holes in her shirt. She said the attacker had used a cup of water sitting on the kitchen counter to put out the flames. She then claimed her attacker took pictures of her with a cell phone but left when the phone rang. The attacker never spoke, she said.

A Criminal Investigations Detective arrived on the scene and interviewed the student. After the interview, the reporting officer “was advised that the title of the report should be false report of a crime,” according to the report.

The student declined to comment.
