Georgia falls on the road to Auburn 59-51

By on February 2, 2012

For about eight minutes on Wednesday night, it looked like the Georgia men’s basketball team may end its two-game losing streak.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 7-0 lead against their hosts from Auburn, and were up 9-2 at the 11:57 mark.

That was as good as it would get the rest of the night for Georgia (10-11, 1-6 SEC), however, as the Tigers came roaring back to take an 11-point advantage into halftime.

And once the Tigers took the lead, they would not relinquish it, notching a 59-51 victory and sending Georgia to its sixth loss in seven games.

MARK FOX

“We just didn’t play very well offensively,” Georgia head coach Mark Fox told Georgia Sports Communications. “Even with our shooting, we had a chance to win the game but made so many unintelligent plays. We let our frustration affect our offensive play. Still, we put ourselves in position and got it to where it was one-possession game, but found a way to mess it up. Give Auburn credit. They got to the foul line a great deal in the second half, and that was real key for them.”

Fox was right about the Tigers (13-9, 3-5) getting to the “foul line a great deal in the second half,” as Auburn shot 26 free throws in the final 20 minutes, making 21 of their attempts and holding off the Bulldogs, who had been able to cut the lead to two with 52 seconds remaining.

The Tigers’ fantastic free throw shooting was highlighted by guard Varez Ward, who went 12-for-12 from the line and was the game’s high scorer with 17 total points.

Georgia’s next game is Saturday, when it heads on the road for the second consecutive game to take on Tennessee at 8 p.m.
