Student receives a dozen drug charges in dorm room

A University student was arrested Thursday night in Russell Hall and charged with 12 drug offenses.

Druva Theja Kota, 18, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, four counts of possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of drug related objects, possession of dangerous drug and five counts of possession of prescription drugs not contained within an original container, according to the report.

On Thursday night, officers were called to investigate a suspicious odor on the east wing of the of Russell Hall.

A residential assistant led the officer to the particular floor, where they then determined what room the smell was coming from, according to the report.

The officer failed to get someone to answer the door and determined the room was empty. Kota was contacted and told to return to his room.

Upon Kota’s arrival, the officers entered the room and remarked on how strongly it smelled of burning marijuana, according to the report.

The officers obtained a search warrant and searched the room, while Kota sat in the hall.

After searching the room, officers found suspected marijuana, a brown envelope containing small baggies, four containers for storing marijuana, one orange pill bottle containing 19 pills, 6 blue and white pills, an electronic scale and cigarette rolling papers, according to the police report.

Kota was arrested and taken to Clarke County Jail.

He declined to comment on the case.
