Women’s tennis sweeps Florida International 7-0 for second consecutive week
Playing Florida International University did not exactly spark déjà vu for the Bulldogs.
Although the No. 6 Bulldogs (6-0) won the match 7-0, much like the previous meeting last Saturday, the rosters had changed and some women had more difficulty than the previous meeting.
No. 52 Lauren Herring had a long, drawn-out second singles match of three sets.

After dropping the second set, she dug into her third-set super tiebreaker and beat Rita Maisak 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-6.
“It was a really tight match overall,” she said. “I had to keep my focus point-in and point-out or she definitely would have taken advantage. I had a lot of missed opportunities and some match points that I didn’t convert. But, you know, a 10-point tiebreak goes really quickly so I knew I had to stay in it.”
No. 56 Kate Fuller, who won her previous match against FIU 6-2, 6-3, also had to dig into her fifth singles match to pull out a win.
She fought against Karyn Guttormsen for two long sets, ultimately winning the match 7-5, 6-4.
“Lauren and Kate, their players really played well against them,” Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. “But they found ways and they kept fighting, and that’s what you want.”
Doubles play moved quickly, with the No. 2 pairing of Nadja Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson shutting out Rita Maisak and Sarah McLean 8-0 in the first doubles match.
“[First] doubles was a totally different team,” Wallace said. “They were moving their feet, they were aggressive, they were having fun out there. They played fantastic.”
Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase, playing third doubles, also easily did away with their opponents Lisa Johnson and Nina Djordjevic 8-1 — a win that clinched the doubles point for the team within the first 30 minutes.
“I thought that was the best match I’ve played,” Kowase said. “We hit every single ball and I didn’t miss that many. My first serve was good and we got it done so quickly.”
The second doubles match moved a little slower, but No. 60 Fuller and Herring toughed out a deuce-ad game at the end of the match against Karyn Guttormsen and Giulietta Boha to win 8-4 in a flurry of net shots.
Singles continued with the theme of quickness, clinching the match within two hours.
No. 2 Gullickson blew through her first singles match with McLean 6-0, 6-2.
Gilchrist did the same, winning her third singles match against Johnson 6-1, 6-0.
“Chelsey played fanastic today, as did Nadja,” Wallace said.
No. 22 Kowase won the fourth singles match against Boha 6-2, 6-1 — a clinch for the Bulldogs.
“Maho, each week, is getting better and better and better,” Wallace said.
This win marked her first clinch of the season.
“I’m so happy,” she said. “I’m getting better every day. Matches and practice are so different. Today was the first day I hit some good forehands and I felt better.”
Alina Jerjomina played her first match of the season at sixth singles, easily dismissing Djordjevic 6-1, 6-1.
“We were able to put Alina in at six today and she won easily and played well,” Wallace said.
The women head to Charlottesville, Va. Feb. 10-13 for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
“A lot of things have to go right, but I feel like we’re one of the most talented teams in the draw,” Herring said. “Talent doesn’t necessarily mean anything if you don’t use that potential, but I feel like we really will. We’ve worked hard. The whole team is really excited.”
