Crime Notebook: University student turned in by roommate for possession of marijuana
University student Brandon Raymond Burton, 20, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on charges of possession of less than one ounce of marijuana and possession of drug related objects, according to an Athens-Clarke County Police report.
An officer arrived at Lakeside Apartments at 4 p.m. in response to a call from Burton’s roommate. He told officers he had asked Burton numerous times not to keep the drug in their apartment. When nothing changed, the roommate decided to “call the police to take care of it,” according to the report.
Burton was in his bedroom when the officers arrived. When the officer entered the room, he said he immediately noticed “a glass jar of what looked to be marijuana” on his desk. When the officer asked Burton if he knew why the police had been called, Burton said yes “and pointed to the jar on the desk.”
Burton consented to a search of his bedroom, during which a scale, pill grinder, marijuana pipe and two empty jars with marijuana residue were found, according to the report.
Burton was read his Miranda rights, placed under arrest and transported to Clarke County Jail.
