Sounds of beach music prevalent in The Grains of Sand
The beauty of beach music is that it’s nothing new — and neither are the members of The Grains of Sand.
The members, with an expansive previous employer list including Marvin Gaye, Patti LaBelle and Jackie Wilson, can brag of over 365 years combined of performance experience.
Which is helpful, because the nine-piece ensemble, complete with a full horn section, recreates the deep funk hits of the past.

But for the band, the years that have passed have made no change in the power of the soul music genre.
“The thing about this kind of music is that it is endless music,” said trumpet player and back-up vocalist Phil Boleman. “It was written and performed before you were even born, probably.”
The songs of Motown and beach music hold a never-ending presence in the hearts and lives of the band members — and it shows.
The group can’t help but rant about its love of the genre.
Beach music has always been a part of the musicians lives and it always will be; they aren’t ready to give it up — even though demand may have decreased since the time of Marvin Gaye.
Even though The Grains of Sand is focused on recreating the music of its idols, it isn’t taking any short cuts.
“What makes us different is we don’t have synthesizers,” said saxophonist and vocalist Donny Whitehead. “They don’t get that sound, they have a sort of plastic sound: it’s not real.”
And, ultimately, the sound is the most important thing to the members of the band.
“It’s just good music,” said trumpet player and vocalist Scotty Piotrowski. “It’s good for the soul and it’s good for the heart.”
The clarity of sound is essential to beach music and The Grains of Sand because it is what carries the feeling to the audience.
“If our music don’t get your heart pumping, you’re dead,” Boleman said.
The group, although worried about the feeling the music carries, also worries about the technicalities. The members of The Grains of Sand are perfectionists.
“We each pride ourselves in excellence,” Boleman said “If we can’t perform a song at a level next to the original, we won’t perform it.”
When done right, the soulful music of the beach crowd can bring a positive message, Whitehead said. And the long-lived presence Motown music has had in the lives of the band members has always been an uplifting one.
“The music kept me light-hearted and, in a sense, mellow on my outlook on life,” Piotrowski said. “The playing has kept me young.”
That love of life and of the music they make carries to the audience as the members of The Grains of Sand share their sound live.
The effect, the band members hope, will be as uplifting as a trip to the beach.
