Advertising
Please check this page frequently as different positions are available throughout the semester. Most openings occur at the beginning or toward the end of a semester.

Account Executives for The Red & Black are responsible for selling and servicing an account list of approximately 25-30 clients. The position also requires the pursuit of new business through effective prospecting and new business sales calls.
Sales Associates are responsible for successfully cold calling and prospecting new businesses and accounts. SAs receive a client list an assigned sales territory after a period of proven performance. Until then, a SA is responsible for building their own account list.
Advertising Interns have the opportunity to learn about the many aspects of newspaper advertising sales. Interns shadow various Account Executives and assist them in completing their responsibilities.
Advertising Assistants are responsible for servicing, selling and maintaining accurate records of advertising orders throughout the department. Within the office, Ad Assistants work to maintain the high level of service expected of an Account Executive.

The Classified Manager is responsible for overseeing the smooth function and operation of The Red & Black’s classified page and the advertising within it. The position requires handling classified correspondence, billing, and ad input for publishing in the classified section of the newspaper, as well as designing special sections to boost classified revenue.

The Classified Intern is responsible for calling back customers to verify information needed to run an ad, contacting customers whose ads have expired, selling new classified business and other clerical duties.

Business
Business Office Intern – NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!
This is a non-paid student staff position requiring 8-10 hours of work per week. The ideal candidate should demonstrate excellent organization and time management skills. Hours for this position are morning or early afternoon, Monday through Friday.
Assistant Office Manager – NO CURRENT OPENINGS
A student staff position requiring 15-20 work hours per week with a schedule running concurrent with the UGA class schedule. The ideal candidate should be customer service oriented with excellent organizational skills.
Receptionist – NO CURRENT OPENINGS
A full time staff position requiring 40 work hours per week. The position runs concurrent with the UGA class schedule. The ideal candidate should possess good organizational and clerical skills, have a pleasant personality, and have Mac experience.
Editorial
The Red & Black’s top student staff member in the newsroom. Responsible for the tone of the newspaper, as well as the direction of the news, sports, variety, photo, copy and opinions desks. The guiding spirit of the editorial staff, the editor in chief is The Red & Black’s ambassador to the University of Georgia community.
The No. 2 student staffer in The Red & Black’s editorial department. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the paper by coordinating the activities of each desk, compiling the daily budget, overseeing the mechanics of putting out the paper and helping to set the tone of the newspaper’s coverage.
Supervisor of The Red & Black’s largest editorial group. Responsible for all news copy that appears in the paper. Oversees a department of up to 20 writers, coordinates coverage with writers and photographers and presents stories in daily budget meetings.
The No. 2 student staffer in the news department, working alongside the News Editor to assign and edit all news copy appearing in the paper. Works with reporters before, during and after the reporting process to ensure coverage is complete before deadline.
In charge of the coverage of University athletics, including everything from football to intramurals. Also responsible for reporting any sports news, such as NCAA allegations and coach hirings/firings. Responsible for all sports copy that appears in the paper.
In charge of covering the entertainment beat on the University campus and in the city of Athens. Responsibilities include overseeing department’s previews, reviews and features on music, film, drama, literature and fine arts, as well as informing readers about upcoming cultural events.
One of the most important jobs in The Red & Black newsroom. The staff member charged with discovering and nurturing new writers. Holds frequent new writers meetings and makes assignments for aspiring reporters. Also works as a liaison with other departments, making sure desk editors are aware of contributor stories that would be appropriate for their section(s).
An integral part of the editorial voice of The Red & Black. Responsible for the design and content of the daily Opinions page. Works closely with the Editor in Chief to select letters to the editor and to write daily institutional editorials. Also works with student columnists to improve their work and helps select the daily editorial cartoon.
Responsible for the visual content of The Red & Black. Works with Chief Photographer, staff photographers and desk editors to distribute photo assignments and is responsible for quality and composition of all photos appearing in the paper. Works with photographers and copy editors to ensure cutline information is correct and concise.
Responsible for taking the bulk of photographs appearing in the paper, including a suitable image for the front page each day. Works with Photo Editor to coordinate assignments and confers with desk editors and reporters to make sure assignments are appropriate to stories being written.
The top writing position at the paper, charged with developing sources and covering a specific beat assigned by the news, sports or variety editor. Also works with younger writers to coordinate coverage when major investigative or enterprise pieces are developed.
Works with Staff Writers to cover beats, as assigned by desk editors. Also responsible for developing story ideas either away from or in concert with their specific beat.
This is where it all begins for Red & Black writers and editors. Working as a contributor is the entry point for all new writers at the paper. This is where the newsroom leaders of tomorrow learn about interviewing, reporting, deadlines and story development. Watch a short presentation about working for the Red & Black as a contributor.
The leader of our five-person copy desk and the staffer responsible for the overall look of the paper. Duties include hiring and training copy editors, sharing front-page design duties, and proofing and editing all copy, graphics, headlines and photo cutlines.
Works with chief copy editor to design pages, write headlines and proof copy for grammar, spelling and style.
Part of the team that serves as the “eyes” of The Red & Black news staff. Responsible for taking photos for various newspaper departments, including advertising. Also responsible for supplying information for descriptive and accurate photo cutlines.

Production Assistant/Graphic Artist – NO CURRENT OPENINGS
This is a student staff position requiring availability of 5-15 work hours per week with a schedule running concurrent with the UGA class schedule. The ideal candidate should be interested in computer graphics, advertising design, newspaper layout and industry-standard software for producing printed products.
