Van Wilder: The movie is better than the book

When National Lampoon decided to create a book based on the popular movie “Van Wilder,” the comedic institution misread its target group. People who like “Van Wilder” probably don’t like to read, especially when a book is as slipshod as this one.

The extremely R-rated movie was based on a simple formula – take one disgusting, vile, gross-out scene and try to top it five minutes later.

Hodawgs prime for regionals

Although Frisbee is popular on Myers quad and other campus locales, the women’s ultimate Frisbee club team plays for more than recreation. The team refers to itself as the Hodawgs. “Ho” stands for horizontal, team members said, the position of a player outstretched for a Frisbee.

‘John Adams’ showcases Giamatti’s talents

In advance of the 2009 Emmys, I’ve prepared a brief speech to commemorate all the people that helped make the TV mini-series “John Adams” possible.

First and foremost, I want to thank God. Without Him, who knows where Hollywood would be? Thank you HBO for spending $100 million on the series.

Soccer success not a fluke

Georgia soccer coach Patrick Baker didn’t spend much time sulking over the team’s 1-0 Sunday loss to Duke. Only two hours after the game, Baker and assistant coach Rob Thompson flew to Boca Raton, Fla., for a recruiting trip at the youth national trials.

In Baker’s three years at Georgia, he has signed two top-15 recruiting classes.

Women’s soccer team falls in NCAA Tourney

The 13th-ranked Georgia soccer team’s record-setting season came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Bulldogs lost 1-0 to Duke.

In a game eerily similar to an earlier loss to Mississippi State, a match in which Georgia outshot its opponent 26-9 but lost 1-0, Georgia couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net against the Blue Devils (9-5-7).

After the Georgia soccer team lost to Florida in the SEC tournament last year, the players had a full year to think about how they let a promising season slip away. They returned to the pitch in August and set a team record for most wins in a season. Yet, once again, the Bulldogs fell to Florida in the SEC tournament.

The two-week, four-game roadtrip is nearing an end. Aboard a bus returning to Athens sits Georgia women’s soccer coach Patrick Baker and the rest of the team. Spirits are high. The team has just defeated Kentucky 1-0 in Lexington.

As the bus heads south on I-75, Baker – a 19-year seasoned veteran, a 200-plus game winner and an astute teacher of the sport, which Pel� dubbed “the Beautiful Game” – rides at the front.

Three months ago, the Georgia soccer team’s senior captain Joni Vickers made a brash statement. Vickers said she didn’t have a single doubt in her mind that the Bulldogs would make the NCAA tournament. Monday night, Vicker’s radical proclamation was proven true.

Soccer defeated by Florida in finals

A different round, the same result.

A year after losing to Florida 4-1 in the first round of the SEC tournament, the No. 13 Georgia soccer team (16-2-2, 9-1-2 SEC) was defeated by the No. 21 Gators 4-1 Sunday in the tournament’s championship game in Orange Beach, Ala.

Soccer team ready for Gamecock ‘underdogs’

When the Georgia soccer team played South Carolina earlier this season, the Gamecocks were the No. 12 team in the country. The Bulldogs weren’t even ranked. Georgia scored with three minutes left in overtime to upset the Gamecocks. When the teams take the field in the second round of the SEC tournament today, their roles will be reversed.
