Athens not site for new bio lab

The University will not house the nation’s next bio-defense lab, reports Wednesday showed.

The Department of Homeland Security picked Manhattan, Kans. to get the $451 million lab designed to study diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans, the Associated Press reported.

A U.S. District Court recommended Friday

the University clear former Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication Dean John Soloski of charges he sexually harassed a coworker.

The University’s investigation into claims made by Janet Jones Kendall, a

former Grady College employee and now public relations specialist for the School of Social Work, was “arbitrary, capricious and unreasonable,” according to court documents obtained by The Red & Black.

Survey: Most students satisfied with University

The number of first-year students and seniors who say they would still attend the University if given the chance to start over remained high in 2008, a study found.

The National Survey of Student Engagement, released Monday, shows 90 percent of freshman and 92 percent of seniors favor their experience.

Professor fired for withholding criminal record

A tenured professor in the College of Education, who served jail time for multiple counts of sodomy and sexual abuse toward children, was fired from the University Thursday, a senior administrator said. Tom Jackson, vice president for public affairs, said the administration “moved immediately” to terminate Cecil Fore III, an associate professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Communication Sciences and Special Education, when the Office of Legal Affairs confirmed reports of his criminal history.

Univ. water woes declining

The University cut its water consumption by nearly 30 percent in the last year, far exceeding the 10 percent reduction recommended state-wide to combat the drought, a Physical Plant official told The Red & Black Tuesday.

This equals more than 93 million gallons of water saved since last November – enough to fill Legion Pool for the next 30 years.

Provost reinstates travel approvals to deans

Terry professor says her pay still not equal

A Terry College associate professor said Monday she sees a “disparity” between her salary and others in her department even after she reached a settlement granting her a 65 percent pay increase.

“What is really key here is not the absolute dollar pay for one faculty member,” Barbara Carroll wrote in an e-mail to The Red & Black, “but (my) pay relative to others of the same/lower rank .

A Terry College professor, who was found in violation of the non-discrimination and anti-harassment policy, reached a settlement agreement with the University in which she stands to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in added salary and retirement benefits.

Univ. monitors travel funds to trim budget (w/documents)

The latest effort by the University to trim the budget has some faculty feeling like they’ve been “slapped in the face.”

Faculty and staff must now submit a detailed travel authority request at least two weeks in advance of travel, citing reasons for the trip and proof it is “mission critical” to their work, according to a memo sent to Franklin College faculty on Sept.
