Every year, many businesses in Athens prepare for summer to be their slow season due to the high number of students who go home until August.
However, it is not every year that businesses also deal with the effects brought on by a recession.
During the past months, many Athens businesses have experienced a decline in sales, while others have watched their sales remain consistent.
Hundreds lose money as Governor’s Scholarship terminated

Some of Georgia’s top scholars learned they will no longer be able to receive scholarship money.
This month, eligible University students were told by the Office of Financial Aid that the Governor’s Scholarship will no longer exist. The scholarship recognized Georgia students who were the valedictorian or the STAR student of their graduating high school class and attended a postsecondary school in Georgia.
Delivery site features gas station goods

With a new year comes a new delivery service to the Athens community. Campus Canteen, an online general store, opened early this year with numerous items available for delivery.
The idea for Campus Canteen came about when co-founder and CEO Jordan Enoch moved from his hometown of Atlanta to New York City for college.

Spending a weekend in downtown Athens or at a party is a great way to relieve the mind for a few days, but sometimes a weekend of peace and relaxation can be better. So, why not take a hike? The University offers three basic physical education classes that take students on different hiking adventures and teach them skills they may need.
Drop rules OK for now

This is the first semester since students were limited to four withdrawals, and the Office of the Registrar said it has seen few problems leading up to today’s withdrawal deadline.

The answer is right here in Athens: the University’s Math Department.
The math department, which recently received a $3.8 million grant from the National Science Foundation, has become a key place for graduates looking to obtain careers in computer engineering, biological engineering, and physics, as well as careers related to math, such as positions in education and accounting.
