Miho, a percussionist in the Hide & Miho ensemble, will perform along with five other musicians tonight at the Ramsey Recital Hall as part of the Hogaku: New Sounds of Japan concert.

Local artists create quilt for Georgia Theatre

The tragic loss of the Georgia Theatre saddened an entire community. Among the many benefit concerts and fundraisers for the Theatre, one local artist is doing her part to help rebuild the famed concert hall, one square at a time.

Jennifer Schildknecht, a multimedia artist from Athens, is calling together artists, musicians and anyone else who wants to be a part of the Georgia Theatre Art Quilt to honor and raise money for the Theatre.

A new student organization called Thrive hopes to aid adults with disabilities after they graduate from high school in continuing social skills, educational skills and employment opportunities. “Once students [with disabilities] graduate from high school, which has served as the main social arena for the majority of the students, the opportunities for socializing are minimal,” said Julie Evans, an adapted physical education coach from Clarke County schools.

This weekend, the Institute for African American Studies will present a three-day symposium honoring the civil rights movement and what work is still being done in the area of civil rights and social issues. “[The symposium will] highlight civil rights activism in Georgia and across the United States,” said Derrick Alridge, director of the Institute for African American Studies.
