Stop discrimination of LGBT

This past weekend, thousands of gay rights activists gathered in Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Equality March to demand equal rights for those who identify themselves as part of the LGBT community. It truly is remarkable how many privileges the heterosexual community is afforded simply for being heterosexual.

This week marks the 27th anniversary of Banned Books Week – an annual event celebrating our freedom to read, free speech and press while also bringing the attention of books being banned in the United States. According to its official Web site, Banned Books Week was created in response to an overwhelming rise of book challenges in schools as well as bookstores and libraries in 1982.

Education: one issue that takes no side

There are so many controversial issues today in the United States – the war in Iraq, health care reform, immigration, gay rights, gun control; and the list goes on and on. But one issue that I feel certain that the majority of us can agree on is the importance of education.

One of my all-time favorite movies is “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and there’s a great quote that Ferris uses to justify his day off which has always stuck with me. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Why Michael Vick deserves a second chance

There are two truths you must know about me before reading this article: 1) I am a huge animal (especially dog) lover. 2) I find many of the past actions of Michael Vick to be completely deplorable. What Michael Vick has admitted to doing to dogs – from bankrolling dog fights to electrocuting and drowning those who were too weak to fight – literally causes my stomach to churn.

Personal ‘bucket lists’ inspiring, helpful

A few years ago, a movie called “The Bucket List” starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson came out. The movie was about two dying friends who create a list of all the things they plan to do before they “kick the bucket.” Many years before “The Bucket List” was released, I created my own such list; however, I aptly named mine “50 Things To Do Before I Die.
