Students to pitch tents in Tate

Students from Invisible Children United will gather at the Tate Center Plaza Friday to make cardboard tents to represent conditions in Internally Displaced Person Camps in Uganda.

The organization is hosting the event to raise awareness for the national Displace Me event taking place in 15 cities across America, including Atlanta.

Company finds internships for pretty price tag

Students looking for internships have more options than just the career center. With competition for internships rising, students now can pay companies to find internships for them.

Companies that find internships include other services such as providing room and board, hosting seminars with professionals to help students network, giving transportation and catering meals.

Austin Carson, a junior from Lawrenceville, said he was fed up with traditional fraternities’ stereotypical dress-codes and hazing practices.

He gathered like-minded men around campus and began throwing parties and other social events last school year.

Athens group works to eliminate poverty

Nearly 1,300 people gathered to hear the local anti-poverty initiative, Partners for a Prosperous Athens, unveil their plan to eliminate poverty late Monday at the Classic Center.

The group has involved local leaders along with the public to find a solution to Athens’ high poverty rate.

24/7 Snelling hours to satisfy late-night cravings

Forget Waffle House. Students need look no further than Snelling for their late-night breakfast fix.

Snelling Dining Hall will become one of the only 24/7 college eateries in the country after Spring Break.

J. Michael Floyd, director of food services at the University, said keeping Snelling open 24 hours is the next logical step after

extending the hours to midnight.

Students march against war in Iraq

Several student organizations marched from the Tate Student Center to the Arch Wednesday in protest of the war in Iraq and possible war in Iran.

Between 40 and 50 students attended the protest, which began in the plaza at 10 a.m.

Raymond Wiley, a senior from Canton and member of the Pagan Student Association, organized the event with Students for Peace Action, UGA Greens, Athens Women in Black and the University’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Grant to assist professor’s study of butterflies

Sonia Altizer has come a long way since receiving her first grow-your-own-butterfly kit at age 12.

An assistant professor in the Institute of Ecology, Altizer received the National Science Foundation Faculty Early Development Career award to study migration and infectious disease patterns in Monarch butterflies.
