Walking up in brown, travel-worn corduroys, a blue-collared shirt and an entanglement of Jesus-hair, local musician James Goodhand’s look is more than a little attached to the creative artist cliché.

The 20-year-old environmental economics major plays bass in two bands, bringing the sweet sound of jazz to gigs at various spots around town.

Indie folkers Vetiver produce sweet, breezy sounds

Vetiver – Vetiveria zizanioides – is a blade of grass. The name is fitting for San Francisco-based indie-folk band Vetiver, whose wispy vocals sway under the breezy zephyr of emotional lyrics and sparse instrumentals.

Like its namesake flora, which is used in perfumes, Vetiver makes a sweet-sounding synesthesia that is pleasant and subtle.

Alynda Lee learned how to play banjo by spending over a year train hopping with crust punks, exploring the Great American West and playing free shows in the band The Dead Man Street Orchestra whenever and wherever there were ears and attention spans. “It’s hard to focus on a project when you’re always transient,” Lee said.

Several University professors will host a roundtable discussion today on the critically acclaimed TV show “Mad Men.”

Winner of three Golden Globes and six Emmys, “Mad Men” is a serialized hour-long drama that airs on the cable network AMC.

Already in its second season, the show chronicles the workplace milieu of protagonist Don Draper at Sterling Cooper, a 1960s advertising agency.

This is a sad time for gamers: the last relevant video game magazine, which claimed the largest circulation of video game magazines throughout much of the ’90s, has shuttered.
Operating since 1989, Electronic Gaming Monthly was the second-oldest video game magazine.
