Avoiding the heart of the health care debate

The essence of the health care debate is not whether those without health insurance should be entitled to health care. It has nothing to do with insurance companies. Neither does it concern the government’s ability to properly fund the program. The smallest amount of economic literacy can answer this question with an overwhelming negative.

‘Darius’ comes home from west

Tonight, the crew of “Darius Goes West” is counting on the University to “be the vehicle” as they continue working on their goal of selling one million DVDs in a year. The University’s Institute on Human Development and Disability will sponsor the screening of “Darius Goes West” at the Tate Theater.

Darius is going platinum.

The film project, “Darius Goes West,” that has been underway for the last three years has finally made it to DVD and the crew has set a goal of selling one million copies.

The idea of the documentary began in 2005 when University graduate Logan Smalley decided to film Cedar Shoals High School student Darius Weems on an adventure to Los Angeles.

Symphony, chorus join for ‘Requiem’

Johannes Brahms’ famous piece, “A German Requiem,” may have been inspired by the deaths of his mother and close friend Robert Schumann, but the lyrics are the composer’s way of comforting all those who grieve the loss of someone special.

Thus, the music school is lucky to have a magnitude of talented voices as this seven-movement composition features the University Concert Choir and University Chorus alongside the University Symphony Orchestra.

Atlanta Ballet to mix genres in Athens

It’s hard to believe that a dance form as intricate and academic as ballet can compel Tchaikovsky, Shakespeare, Dracula and Big Boi to see eye to eye with one another.

As part of the Performing Arts Center’s Dance Festival series, the Atlanta Ballet will bring a mixed bag of different genres and time periods to the University.

The University’s Hodgson Hall took on a unique tone Sunday night when people of all ages and walks of life gathered to experience a performance that originated on the other side of the globe.

The Performing Arts Center was filled with an intense passion for tango as the Argentinian dance troupe Tango Buenos Aires began its performance of “The Four Seasons.

Just like Bela Fleck & Jerry Douglas, Chet Atkins & Tommy Emmanuel and Levon Helm & Ringo Starr, Tom Gray and Mark Johnson of blues band Delta Moon are bringing two different styles to the same music. Gray and Johnson, both guitar players, met each other in a music store around 10 years ago.
