Fraternity to promote ‘green’ cars

Green machines, start your engines.

A coed professional fraternity will display fuel efficient Chevy cars as part of the Green REVolution event on Legion Field today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pi Sigma Epsilon will work with the Athens Marketing Partners as part of the Chevy marketing program to possibly show cars such as

the Cobalt XFE, a fuel efficient Malibu, Tahoe Hybrid and Equinox Fuel Cell.

Trainer tests body fat before holiday feasting

I woke up yesterday feeling kind of fat, and a two-minute body composition test proved it.

Once a month, Ramsey’s personal trainers charge $1 for students to learn their body fat content. They use a skin fold caliber – a device like a plastic clothes-pin – to pinch the chest, thighs and abdomen for men and the tricep, thigh and area above the hip for women.

Athens has many opportunities for service

Volunteering in Athens allows students to take a break from campus life while serving the community.

Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services helps students get involved in the arts, athletics, natural resources and recreation.

Some students can receive community service hours for course credit.

Subleasing an alternative to paying for empty home

University students turn to subleasing when college life requires flexibility that many annual apartment leases do not offer.

Subleasing, or subletting, is when a tenant transfers part of a remaining lease term to a new renter. Subleasing is popular among students graduating in the fall or spring, studying abroad or those living in places that do not offer short-term leases.

Monthlong contest pumps novel writing

University students plan to write their own 50,000-word novels in a month-long contest. Each student signs up for National Novel Writing Month on the NaNoWriMo Web site.

There are no prizes and no one at NaNoWriMo reads the entries, so all participants win by submitting their work online by Nov.

Project promotes rights

Civil rights for immigrants in Georgia is important in a post-Sept. 11 atmosphere, a speaker told the Muslim Law Students Association on Thursday as part of a new project.

“This project is aimed at immigrants who have had their civil liberties restricted by the government,” said Muneer Awad, a graduate student from Marietta.

New group discusses controversial issues

A group of University students not afraid to discuss controversial issues on campus decided to form an group called Sustained Dialogue.

“We will cover topics like sexuality, race, gender, socioeconomic issues and all the difficult things that are hard to talk about,” said Cynthia Polk-Johnson, director of Multicultural Services and Programs.

Diaper stuffing to fix drought

Diapers may tell you everything you need to know about solving the drought.

Or at least that’s what University 4-Hers were trying to discover Wednesday.

Members ripped stuffing from diapers and added water to them to learn about water absorption.

“The material mixed in diapers is called polymers,” said Laura Warren, a sophomore 4-Her from Camilla.

Turf crew keeps Sanford in tip-top shape

It’s the place where Dogs hit the gridiron, hall of famers get their start, triumphs are celebrated and losses mourned.

And it’s where Kenny Pauley clocks 14-hour days to keep Sanford Stadium in prime playing condition.

Pauley, director of athletic turf and grounds, and his crew mow, paint and prep the field where the Bulldogs play to roaring crowds.

SAT writing considered

University President Michael Adams may approve a proposal to add the SAT writing section as a requirement for first-year applicants for Fall 2009.

The College Board, which administers the SAT, added a writing section three years ago.

“There is a lot of history as to why [the College Board] did this,” said Patrick Winter, senior associate director of admissions.
