Univ. has ‘good shot’ at laboratory bid

The decision for the site of the National Bio and Agro-Defense Laboratory is expected within the next month, and administrators said they believe the University has a “good shot” at getting the bid.
The University has been involved in a three-year courtship to host the $500 million Department of Homeland Security laboratory that would study animal diseases and pathogens at a site on South Milledge Avenue.
University housing rates increase next year (w/documents)

Rates for University Housing are set to increase next year for all housing residents, which Housing expects to create a $3.5 million surplus.
Housing plans to raise the rates for the high rise dormitories by 8 percent and 6 percent for traditional residence halls.
Redcoats gear up for new facility

For 100 years, the Redcoat Marching Band has been an integral part of the University but they have lacked a practice facility to call their own. Construction has started on a practice field for the Redcoat Band on Intramural Field 9.
“I don’t know of any college marching band that does not have a place to rehearse or call home,” said Michael Robinson, director of athletic bands.

With the University in a financial crunch due to a possible 6 to 10 percent budget cut, the Georgia Athletic Association is facing one of its best years in recent times with a 8 percent increase in revenue.
Athletics are a big business – the Association expects to rake in between $76 million and $80 million this year, said Frank Crumley, executive associate athletic director for finance and business.
Women’s studies group petitions to move out

Rats in the walls, leaking roofs, possible asbestos and damaged walls are some of the issues that women’s studies students say they encounter in Benson Building on Lumpkin Street daily.
These are some of the complaints cited in a petition started by members of the Women’s Studies Student Organization in an effort to “Get Women’s Studies out of Benson!”
“A lot of faculty and students suffer headaches and sinus problems after spending significant time in the building,” said April Greene, a senior from Tunnel Hill and the creator of the petition.
Arrest policy altered for students (w/policy and audio)

Students may try to hide arrests from their parents, but a new code of conduct policy requires all arrests to be reported to the University within 72 hours.
On Thursday the University Cabinet approved the code, which requires students to report arrests, criminal convictions and other disciplinary action to the Office of Judicial Programs.

On Nov. 7, 1968, retired Col. Leon Ellis was flying an armed reconnaissance mission to bomb gun sites that protected a ferry. His airplane was hit with flack and the airplane blew up into three pieces.

Regents: GIL library service cut as of Oct. 1

Budget cuts continue to strike key services that affect the education of students and faculty research as GIL Express will be discontinued Oct. 1.
GIL Express is a service that allows students and faculty to request a book from any University System of Georgia institution.
ROTC runs in honor of Sept. 11 victims

Members of the University ROTC units will run today in memory of the nearly 3,000 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001 and those who have died in service since the tragedy.
“Basically we’re memorializing the people who died on Sept. 11,” Alex Webb, a senior from Warner Robins and Army ROTC cadet, said.
