Hoover, Ala., is only 227 miles from Foley Field. This spring, the Birmingham suburb and site of the SEC baseball tournament has felt worlds away for the young Diamond Dogs. With just a 7-14 record in conference play, what was once “Destination: Omaha” has become “Destination: Birmingham.

Diamond Dogs fail to ‘put everything together’

More than a month after sweeping Auburn to begin their conference slate, the Diamond Dogs still are searching for their second SEC series win. For the fourth straight weekend, Georgia (17-28, 7-14 SEC) was unable to pull out a victory in the Sunday rubber match, falling to Kentucky in Lexington, 13-5.

Freshman Poythress recovered from injury

Rich Poythress entered fall baseball practice as a prized freshman unsure of his role on the team depth chart but hopeful a strong first impression would move him into the rotation. The way in which he made a name for himself in preseason workouts probably was not how he envisioned.

Diamond Dogs rally to victory in eighth

Scoring eight runs in a game has been a challenge for the Diamond Dogs for most of the spring.

Sometimes, managing to total eight in a weekend has been difficult.

Wednesday night, six outs from a crushing defeat, Georgia put up eight in the eighth inning alone, a season high for one inning and the difference as Georgia (16-26) rallied to beat Western Carolina (28-13), 12-7, in Cullowhee, NC.

Diamond Dogs defeat Tech in Atlanta

ATLANTA – Something about playing under the Major League lights brings out the best in the Diamond Dogs.

Last night, it also brought out the best in Matt Olson.

Thanks to career-highs in hits (four) and RBIs (six) from the junior right fielder, the Diamond Dogs (15-26) redeemed a loss last week to Georgia Tech (26-15), 10-7, before 21,620 at Turner Field.

Whenever the Diamond Dogs encountered a problem with the pitching arrangement early this spring, Stephen Dodson became the easy remedy. When the team needed a third starting pitcher to round out the initial rotation, it was Dodson who got the call. After a forgettable first start, it was Dodson who was asked to fill the hole as the primary set-up man and bridge to closer Joshua Fields, a role he excelled in last season.

Entering Wednesday’s in-state grudge match, the Diamond Dogs believed that a win against Georgia Tech could once again be what was needed to spark a late-season rally.

Instead, as has been the case more often than not this spring,, they are left frustrated and searching for an answer.

Dogs hope Tech game mirrors last season

At this time last season, a Diamond Dogs upset of then No. 8 Georgia Tech proved to be the jumpstart for their run in the NCAA Tournament.

Entering the rivalry match having lost five of seven, the Georgia team went on to win 13 games in a row and 17 of its last 20 after shocking the Yellow Jackets, 12-6, on April 26.

Diamond Dogs’ closer weathers challenging year

At the start of the fall semester, Joshua Fields knew he needed a break. The flame-throwing right arm that tied the Georgia record for saves in a season (15), helped take the Diamond Dogs to within a hair of a championship and made him the top pitcher in the summer Cape Cod League could take no more, so Fields sat out fall baseball workouts.
