Geology student discovers reef formation in cave

A University student who found a rare coral reef formation last year is still reaping the benefits of his discovery.

Ted Lord, an undergraduate geology major, discovered the formation – one that has never before been found in North America – in a cave in northwest Georgia while leading a Boy Scout trip last fall.

Local businesses continue practice of minimums on credit card purchases

Many students are familiar with the words “$10 minimum” as they order a drink downtown. But for those with MasterCard and Visa credit cards, this practice may violate a user agreement between the business and the card company.

“This has come up in the past,” said Shawn Conroy, spokesman for Georgia’s Governor’s Office for Consumer Affairs.

Microsoft Outlook Live will replace UGAMail

EITS has chosen Microsoft Outlook Live to replace the current UGAMail system as the University’s primary e-mail client.

‘Green IT’ saves money by adopting ‘sleep’ mode

The University will save $30,000 to $40,000 per year by programming computers to “sleep” when in periods of extended inactivity.

“The University could save $500,000 to $1 million a year if we had 100 percent adoption,” said Tommy Larson, IT Manager at the Terry College of Business.

Housing considers removing dormroom landlines

The phone you never use could disappear next year.

As a result of an online Educational Benchmarking survey, University Housing is considering discontinuing the landline phone service to on-campus residents in favor of the monetary benefits.

“Each line costs approximately $20 a month,” said Ralphel Smith, assistant director of residence hall services.
