Terrorism expert resigns amid sexual harassment investigation

An international affairs professor has resigned after a University investigation of sexual harassment complaints against him. Assistant professor Stephen Shellman told The Red & Black on Monday he tendered his resignation on March 7, but it will not take effect until the end of April.

Man driving Univ. van gets DUI

A University employee was arrested Thursday and charged with DUI while driving a University van.

According to Athens-Clarke County and University Police reports:

A passerby called ACC Police at 12:20 a.m. to report a reckless driver on West Broad Street driving a white van with two flat tires and a Clarke County government license plate.

It’s early on a weekday morning and two reporters are rushing up stairs of the Driftmier Engineering Center on South Campus. “That’s the way it has been for the past month,” said Pam Knox of the center as a reporter set up a camera. The reporters want to interview David Emory Stooksbury, who has become a major source of information on the historic Georgia drought.

Second student arrested during sting on child predators

A University student arraigned in court Monday remains in jail for soliciting sex from someone he believed to be a 15-year-old girl, police said.

Peachtree City Police arrested Joseph Fitzgerald Carroll on Friday after he solicited sex on the Internet and traveled to Peachtree City to meet the girl, Chief Jim Murray said Monday in a telephone interview.

Student denies beating puppies to death

A University student who worked at the veterinary hospital and is accused of beating seven puppies to death said Tuesday the act isn’t anything she would do. “Whatever happened was unintentional,” said Ashley Rose Council, a junior from Ellenwood, in a telephone interview Tuesday with The Red & Black.

Faculty petition Univ. over childcare

A group of University faculty and staff plan to highlight the need for more on-campus childcare options during a University Council Benefits Committee meeting today.

The group called UGA Childcare Coalition, with a core of about 20 students and faculty members, began pushing University administrators to pursue on-campus child care options more than a decade ago.
