UGA researcher says cigarette ban too lax

Though sweet-tasting cigarettes with flavors such as vanilla, strawberry or clove are now banned, a University researcher is saying the ban does not go far enough.

President Barack Obama signed into law the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act in June, which banned all flavors of cigarettes – except menthol.

Researchers take it from dead trees to diesel

A team of University researchers – funded by the state through the Traditional Industries program – developed a method for turning biomass waste, such as dead trees and paper pulp, into a liquid fuel to power diesel engines.

The team, led by Tom Adams with co-inventors Dan Geller, Joshua Pendergrass and Manuel Garcia-Perez, has licensed the method to California-based energy company, Tolero Energy, LLC.

UGA researcher discovers change in butterfly ratios

One University researcher stumbled into some findings that may have a profound effect on the butterfly population in the Southeast.

Andy Davis – a doctoral candidate in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources – discovered that female to male ratios for Monarch butterflies east of the Rocky Mountains have been gradually changing in favor of the males.

Mislabeled dining hall foods cause vegans to drop meal plan

Two University students still have a bitter taste in their mouths after finding out the dining halls were mislabeling some foods as vegan.

Ashley Braid, a junior from Richmond Hill, and Jason Lukich, a senior from Richmond Hill, discovered ingredients such as milk, eggs and cheese in products that were labeled by the dietary staff as vegan.
