As children we all had that moment when we sat at the dining room table, pushing our food around with the fork, dreading the last bite of carrots. Our doting mothers would smile and say, “Eat your vegetables, and you will grow up to be big and strong.” Many years later, we are all grown up and still have no idea what those carrots really did to help us grow.

Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung once said, “The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.” The same type of transformation came when lead singer and guitarist Benjy Davis and percussionist Mic Capdevielle met in grade school; the two instantly bonded.

Since its grassroots founding on Feb. 12, 1909, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has spread its arms of influence to reach and affect supporters and members both across the country and internationally. Tomorrow, the University’s chapter of NAACP will celebrate 100 years of success by honoring students and people from the Athens community in the Third Annual Image Award Ceremony.

“It’s a celebration of the ‘weekend-ness,’” said WUGA 91.7′s program director Robb Holmes, about the “It’s Friday!” series.

The first show aired in a small room, no bigger than a walk-in closet. Holmes was at the control board, the performer across from him, with guitar in hand and amp at his feet.

Theater adapts holiday classic

In 1983, Jean Shepherd’s film, “A Christmas Story,” introduced the American home to Ralphie Parker, a leg lamp, a pink bunny suit and, of course, “You’ll shoot your eye out.” Starting tonight, the motion picture classic moves to the Elbert Theatre stage. Staying true to the original film, the play will trace 9-year-old Ralphie Parker’s efforts to obtain a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.
