HOPE still a good deal during recession

Georgia spoils us rotten. It offers paid tuition to in-state students earning simply a B average, thus tucking us comfortably beneath a financial umbrella enjoyed by students in only a few other states, and it supplies a substantial book stipend to boot. Still, classmates complain that HOPE’s just not enough.

Civil classroomsProfessors should limit lectures to academics, not The R&B crime blotter. Following multiple reports recently in The Red & Black regarding students arrested on felony charges, we have been notified about professors ostracizing these students during class time.

Facebook notified me of an event invitation. Another party, I wondered, maybe a concert downtown? Not at all. “Event info for John Doe’s (name has been changed) funeral: Host: Turner Funeral Home Type: Other – Ceremony” This can’t be real, I thought. No one could sink that low.

Revenue or résuméOvereager parents need to step back and let children make their own way. Hard work used to pay off. Now, some people are paying for hard work. We were appalled by a Jan. 28 Wall Street Journal article reporting parents are seeking placement programs, marketing consultants and online charity auctions to buy their children internships – mainly unpaid.
