Versfeld sets record as men swimmers finish 10th at NCAAs

The Georgia men’s swimming and diving team finished the NCAA championship the way it started after Day 1 – in 10th place.

The Bulldogs finished with 131 points, two shy of ninth place finisher Virginia (133) and 395 points behind meet winner Auburn (526).

After a brief night’s opener to the men’s NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, Georgia is exactly where it hoped to be – in the top 10.

The Bulldogs amassed a total of 36 points, good enough for the 10th spot in the standings. Texas, a loaded team that the Bulldogs lost to earlier in the season, are sitting at No.

At noon today, the Georgia men’s swimming and diving team begins its NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships meet at Texas A&M University in College Station.

The meet will last three days, with prelims held at noon and finals at 7 p.m. each day.

The biggest question surrounding the men’s team at the outset of this year was how it would replace its three individual champions from last year’s NCAA competition: Sebastian Rouault (500 and 1,650-yard freestyle), Gil Stovall (200-yard butterfly) and Chris Colwill (1-meter diving).

Women’s swimming finishes second at NCAAs

The No. 2 Georgia women’s swim team (9-0) finished the 2009 NCAA championships in second place on Saturday night in College Station, Texas, at Texas A&M University.

The youthful team, comprised of mostly freshmen and sophomores, sent a message to the competing field for the future, reasserting Lady Bulldog dominance after a seventh place finish in last year’s competition.

The Georgia women’s swimming and diving team held true to their national ranking yesterday in Day 1 of the Women’s NCAA Championship meet at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

The No. 2 Lady Bulldogs finished the day second in the standings with 133 points, trailing only Arizona (141.

Most Georgia students are getting excited about the NCAA basketball tournament, filling out brackets and participating in pools with friends. But starting today, one Georgia women’s team will be competing in a more traditional pool: the women’s Division I NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

After regrouping from a strenuous SEC championship meet, both Georgia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will have one final shot at qualifying swimmers for the NCAA championships this weekend in the Bulldog Last Chance meet.

Rather than racing top swimmers from the SEC, the Bulldogs must rely on each other in pushing themselves to faster times.

Swimming falls short at SEC finals

The No. 1 Georgia women’s swim team came up two places short of an SEC title this past weekend, despite setting a new school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay, the final event of the SEC Championships held in Auburn.

The relay team of Allison Schmitt, Jessica Cole, Kelly McNichols and Morgan Scroggy finished in second place behind Auburn with a time of 3:13.

On Thursday, the No. 1 Georgia women’s swim team swam with a vengeance, gaining a huge amount of ground in the race for the SEC title this week.

Both of Georgia’s swimming and diving programs got off to a rough start in the SEC championship meet on Wednesday evening, even after improving times in all four relays.

The No. 1 Lady Bulldogs entered the meet with the fastest times in all five relays, but failed to win both the 200-yard medley relay as well as the 800-yard freestyle relay, placing third and second respectively.
