Coca-Cola awards first generation Univ. students with $1 million in aid

Twelve first-generation University freshmen will receive a helping hand from supporters at the Coca-Cola Foundation.
The Coca-Cola Foundation has donated $1 million to the University to assist students who are the first in their families to attend college in an expansion of Coke’s First Generation Scholarship program.
Ecology school nation’s first

The University introduced the nation’s first stand-alone academic school of ecology Sunday.
But before it opened, The Eugene P. Odum School of Ecology was ranked among the top colleges of ecology in the nation by the National Resource Council.
With a strong faculty and international stature, the school has lived up to the legacy of its namesake – the late pioneering University professor who was also known as the “father of modern ecology.
Committee meets on parking, new SLC

The University Facilities Committee discussed two pressing issues for the University – parking availability and the possibility of constructing a second Student Learning Center.
With new students attending school each year, the University has considered expanding parking services, said Doug Ross, the director of Auxiliary and Administrative Services.
District race down to two; runoff in July

The 10th District congressional election did not yield a decision about who will represent the district.
Republican Jim Whitehead failed to receive the majority vote he needed to secure his seat in Congress and avoid a runoff election.
Whitehead – who received 44 percent of the vote – will face Paul Broun, a Republican from Athens, who secured about 21 percent of the vote.
Orientation kicks off

Before many incoming freshmen can become true “Bulldogs,” they must undergo the ritual of freshman orientation.
This summer, over 4,800 incoming freshmen will spend the night at Creswell Hall during one of the 16 two-day orientation sessions.
With 300 students per session and only two days to prepare for their first year in college, Director of Orientation Eric Johnson said, “They are in for a very packed schedule.
