Men’s tennis season comes to disappointing end

Just a year ago, the Georgia men’s tennis team celebrated a second consecutive NCAA Team Championship with a 4-2 victory over the Texas Longhorns.
This season, the Bulldogs were unable to create the same magic, losing to the Longhorns in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships.

The SEC Champion Georgia women’s tennis team proved to be too strong for South Carolina State, victor of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
The second-ranked host Bulldogs of Georgia (24-2) dominated the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State 4-0 Saturday in front of a partisan Georgia crowd at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The TV plays ESPN’s coverage of the championship point of the Bulldogs’ triumph over Stanford in the 2000 NCAA Championships on a continuous loop.
Head coach Jeff Wallace, who was the engineer behind the only two team titles in 1994 and 2000, admitted he occasionally takes a peek at the TV.

Wallace recalls tennis history

In 1986, Jeff Wallace took over a Georgia women’s tennis team coming off a 16-20 season.
Since Wallace’s hire, the Georgia women have not looked back. Over the 24 years, Wallace, a former tennis player at Georgia, has led his teams to seven SEC regular-season titles and six SEC Tournament championships, with the most recent coming this past Sunday.

The top-seeded Bulldogs (23-2) blasted No. 10 Tennessee 4-0 in the finals of the 2009 SEC Tournament in Fayetteville, Ark.

A year ago, the Georgia women’s tennis team were underdogs, despite heading into the 2008 SEC Tournament as the No. 2 seed.
After all, 2008 regular season champion Florida strolled into the postseason unscathed and unmatched in conference play.
But the Bulldogs, comprised of a promising sophomore class, willed their way through three tough victories, including two thrillers, a 4-3 decision over Arkansas in the semifinals and a 4-3 nail-biter over the arch-rival Gators in the tournament final – with Naoko Ueshima clinching both matches for the Bulldogs.

In its quest for their third consecutive SEC Tournament title, the Georgia women’s tennis team ordered T-shirts with the slogan “On Fee for Three.” “Fee” is intended to be slang for the word fire.
After knocking off Alabama 6-1 in Tuscaloosa just three weeks ago, the Bulldogs started off red-hot Friday morning as they advanced past the Crimson Tide in the quarterfinal round of the 2009 SEC Tournament.
