Through eyes blurred by tears, I watched them bury the ashes of what used to be a close friend. How can such a small box – small enough to be held with one hand – hold so much? The body of a 20-year-old man. His bones and hair, tattooed skin and attractive smile, cremated into a pile of nothing.

Ever watch 12-year-old girls dance to a song about men ejaculating on women? I did, one Saturday afternoon, with my best friend at his niece’s softball game. After one inning, loudspeakers blared Soulja Boy’s popular rap song “Crank That.” Young players innocently danced to the song, imitating the music video’s “superman” dance moves.

Lack of gay rights prevent true ‘equality’

His promises are great. His speeches are even better. But President Barack Obama’s flip-flopping stance on gay rights leaves me doubtful of his promises for equality. Homosexuals do not have the same rights as other Americans, plain and simple. And that means America is not an entirely free nation.

Staying in college has made me homeless

I sleep in my car at night. The Publix parking lot is my neighborhood. A large suitcase is my closet, the back seat is my bed. Like many students at the University of Georgia, even higher tuition and today’s lousy economy have altered my lifestyle. I make enormous sacrifices to attend this fine school, but I wonder if this uncomfortable living situation – this sleeping in parking lots and on the couches of friends – is necessary.
