Worth the Drive

Fans of the hit radio song “Nothing Left to Lose” may be surprised to hear other types of music from musician Mat Kearney, who mixes hip-hop lyrics and beats with his acoustic folk-pop sound many radio listeners may have heard.

“I was an English major in college, and I really got into music through culture and spoken word and that whole urban scene,” Kearney said.

Atlanta-based pop rock band Cartel has been touring and playing shows the past several months, but the group will keep its busy schedule for a while. “We’re going to be working on our new record between April and June, so we’ve been writing between soundchecks,” said Will Pugh, lead vocalist and guitarist for the band that plans to release a new album by fall.

Laughing bonds crowd at Vagina Monologues

It really made sense what the Vagina Monologues’ director Erin McGinley said about the performance: that people laughing together bond better than people crying together.

Think about it – groups who are looking for higher representation won’t get anywhere by sitting around crying about their problems.

Smith deserves respect in death

When I heard about Anna Nicole Smith’s death Thursday afternoon, I couldn’t believe it. I wouldn’t say I was shocked (well, may be a little), but it just didn’t make sense to me. How does a nearly 40-year old, seemingly healthy woman die? Thousands of Web sites were reporting and updating a couple of hours after her death (I know – I read most of them), and all of the entertainment and news channels worldwide were talking about it non-stop for hours.

As my taste evolves, Grammys lose appeal

Being the huge music buff I am, watching the Grammy Awards has always been a time-honored tradition. I love watching the preshow with the red carpet – listening to the various bands talk about their music and seeing the eccentric fashions. Unlike other award shows, I usually don’t have to hear Joan Rivers complaining about people’s outfits because many musicians tend to express their creativity through their clothing almost as much as through their music.

Holiday puts spotlight on cute, overlooked pet

I’ve never been one to call Groundhog Day my favorite holiday (in fact, I’ve always seen it as a pretty pointless day), but I’m starting to see how it is a fun time of year.

Most groundhogs are pretty cute (if you’re into that big rat type of look). And it’s so bizarre how people from various parts of the world give so much attention to one animal for one day.

The best bands show stylistic range

Some of my favorite bands are the ones that can play a variety of styles of music.

Take Modern Skirts, for example.

That band can rock out the 40 Watt Club, but the members can also play some pretty enjoyable acoustic tunes in the middle of the day. Either way, I love them.

IDOL CHATTER

The search for the next American Idol again looked grim Wednesday. In the second two-hour episode, “American Idol” Season Six went to Seattle, Wash.

And the end of the two-day stint, they walked away with a handful of singers to take on to the next round of competition. This goes with the other handful of winners from the first show in Minneapolis. They usually have more contestants by now.

Sarah Jessica look-alike to give performance at Melting Point

“Sex and the City” fans may think they see Sarah Jessica Parker walking around town this week, but they’re probably wrong.

It’s most likely female pop singer Sam Shaber, who’s playing at the Melting Point tonight as part of the Uncorked & Unplugged music series.

Tucked in-between downtown spots lies a second home

Every city, big or small, has places in town that are little hideaways.

Examples are little clothing boutiques, art shops or local restaurants that might be located in a busy area such as downtown, but are situated away from the hustle and bustle of the city life.
