An Athens-Clarke County proposal to eliminate happy hour drink prices may be on the rocks.

ACC Commissioner Kelly Girtz said eliminating drink specials is one of many recommendations being discussed in the legislative review committee, but it is not heavily favored.

Memorial service honors fallen Univ., Virginia Tech students, faculty

Members of the University community who died in the past year and victims of the April 16 Virginia Tech tragedy were honored in a candlelight memorial service Thursday night.

University President Michael Adams spoke from the steps of the Chapel to a crowd of more than 200 in remembrance of those who were lost.

ACC mayor speaks on poverty

Athens has come a long way in a number of areas needing improvement but still has progress to make, Athens-Clarke County Mayor Heidi Davison said Monday night.

Davison addressed a mixed crowd of about 40 in the Student Learning Center in a speech sponsored by the University Campus Greens and tackled subjects such as education, poverty and the environment.

Members of the Young Democrats, Campus Greens, Georgia GuardDawg, Roosevelt Institution and College Republicans participated in a structured debate on a variety of topics.

The University’s Young Democrats will host a series of events this week aimed at increasing political awareness on campus. The week, titled “The Best Week Ever,” began with a date auction Sunday and also includes guest speaker lectures and a current events panel discussion, according to a news release.

Democrats must learn to be fearless and better purveyors of significant messages to have a chance at winning local elections, former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes said Wednesday.

Barnes spoke to nearly 50 students at the University’s Young Democrats weekly guest speaker series and addressed problems and necessities of the Democratic party.

Professor tackles religion, stem cell research

While religious and moral viewpoints conflict with gaining sufficient funding, a University professor who recently reached a breakthrough in stem cell research said he hopes for a compromise in his field.

Steve Stice, director of the University’s Regenerative Bioscience Center, detailed his personal experiences and other facets of the stem cell debate Wednesday.

Speaker honors gay activism landmarks

The University’s gay community has had many civil rights victories since the late 1960s, but it still has a way to go, a University official said Friday.

Michael Shutt, assistant dean of students, gave a presentation titled “The Queer History of the University of Georgia, 1969-Present,” featuring research done by past and present students on the history of homosexuality at the University.

ImagineAir chooses class for marketing

An Atlanta-based airline with a new concept of air travel chose a University marketing class to prepare its advertising campaign.

Haroon Qureshi, director of public relations for ImagineAir, said the company chose Jooyoung Kim’s Advertising Campaigns class to create a marketing campaign featuring “creative styles for a smaller budget.
