Buying locally grown food can lower gas prices

A tangible way to significantly lower gas prices has been found.

“If every person in America bought locally grown food instead of from the grocery store, gas could be 25 percent cheaper,” Michael McMullen said. “That’s because 25 percent of our gas [is used] to ship food from California, Florida and Arizona all over the country.”

New PostSecret book echoes appeal of popular Web site

Frank Warren’s novel idea is a secret – not his secret, but the secrets of thousands of other people.

The seeds of Warren’s popular Web site, PostSecret.com, were sewn during a community art project in Washington D.C. His idea was to have people write personal secrets on a post card in a creative way and mail them to him anonymously.

Nuci’s Space celebrates 9th anniversary with party, 5K run

It is Nuci’s Space’s 9th anniversary today and they are celebrating. Located just a five minutes’ walk from North Campus, Nuci’s Space is a haven for musicians, especially students. It began after Nuci Phillips, senior at the University, committed suicide in 1996.

Ukulele performer calls Athens ‘the coolest place in the South’

The ukulele’s origins lie in a stringed instrument called the machete, which was imported to Hawaii from Portugal in the 19th century. Hawaiians took the idea and ran with it. Dent May has since taken the ukulele and ran around the world. “I think [Athens] is the coolest place in the South,” May said.

Performing as the opening act for such an iconic musician as B.B. King, no matter how old he gets, is daunting.

Rachael Cantu, a 28-year-old self-taught musician from Southern California, humbly says she hardly deserves to play on the same stage as the blues legend, but her sultry voice and musical talent say otherwise.
