Rodeo returns to town after long break

Break out the blue jeans, belt buckles and boots – the Great Southland Stampede Rodeo is returning to Athens after spending the past four years outside of Athens-Clarke County. The student-run rodeo will take place tonight through Saturday at the Livestock Teaching Arena located at the corner of South Milledge Avenue and Whitehall Drive.

For former men’s basketball players Takais Brown, Mike Mercer and Rashaad Singleton, dwelling on the past achieves nothing. Since leaving the team during the season, the trio of former Georgia basketball players all have managed to move on in their separate directions.

Univ. alumna brings passion to role in Athletic Association

When her Lady Dogs career finished, Carla Green Williams went pro in sports, but she always has been at the college level.

After ending her basketball career following the 1988-89 season, Williams started on a track that took her from an assistant coach to her present position as Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services, where she is one of the most powerful people in the University Athletic Association.

Equestrian walk-on set to exhibit

Two years ago, Amber Fellows was working at the Animal Science Complex on South Milledge while dreaming of making the varsity equestrian team.

At the time, Fellows, who has ridden horses since she was 10, already had tried out twice and was being paid by the hour to clean, feed and move the team’s horses.

Family development professor speaks about children’s rights

The government’s role in raising children grew during the 20th century as the number of children increased, a University professor said Wednesday.

“It was a very gradual change, where the nature of society was changing and the nature of parent-child relationships changed because of industrialization and schools and labor laws,” Lynda Walters, professor of child and family development, said at a lunch in the Student Learning Center.

Univ. offers incentives for completing survey

University administrators want freshmen and seniors to participate in the National Survey of Student Engagement Thursday when it goes online.

The survey is used to measure the quality of the University, but it is an uphill battle for researchers to get students to take it.

Equestrian gallops into victories

The Georgia equestrian is one win away from having its fifth-straight undefeated season at home after two wins over the weekend at the Animal Science Complex on South Milledge Avenue. Georgia (8-2) started out on Saturday defeating previously undefeated Oklahoma State (6-1) 10-8 behind outstanding performances by sophomores Haylie Jayne and Daisy Whelan and senior Michelle Blair.

Dooley honor awaits consent (with podcast)

Former University athletic director Vince Dooley always will be remembered on South Campus, pending approval of the Board of Regents.

The regents will consider the “The Vince Dooley Athletic Complex” when they meet today in Atlanta. Approval could be granted as early as today, but University spokesman Chuck Toney said approval will most likely take place on Wednesday after a review.
