Students ‘Ride for Christ’ during break

About 100 students from the Baptist Collegiate Ministry rode bicycles to Jacksonville, Fla., Wednesday.
They biked the 283 miles to raise money to send students on all-expense paid mission trips for the summer.
The event, called Ride for Christ, ended in Jacksonville, where the participants watched the Georgia-Florida football game before heading back to Athens Sunday.
Water conservation task force to release report, decision to follow

University students received a campus-wide e-mail Monday with an update on the water shortage.
A specific plan for University water conservation will have to wait until November.
The University Task Force on Water Resources, developed to form a University-wide conservation strategy, plans to release a report in mid-November.
Campus Cats ‘humanely’ controls, adopts strays

They can be found lurking in the bushes of South Campus, scouting out North Deck or scampering across sidewalks by family housing.
They are the stray cats of the University campus.
Campus Cats is an organization trying to remedy this stray cats problem.
The goal of the Campus Cats program is “to humanely reduce the number of homeless cats on the UGA campus,” according to their Web site.
Eateries support Athens farmers

Leave the supermarket behind, it’s “Eat Local Week” in Athens.
Between today and Sept. 27, Athens restaurants will feature locally grown produce.
The event, sponsored by Georgia Organics, is part of the statewide “I’m a Local” campaign.
Locally it is coordinated by Promoting Local Agriculture and Cultural Experiences and Farm 255.
Minimum wage study discovers downside

The minimum wage handicaps its recipients according to a study published by University professor Joseph Sabia on the impact of a minimum wage increase on single mothers. The two-year study was funded and released through the Employment Policies Institute, a nonprofit organization based out of Washington, D.
SLC open all day starting Monday

Beginning Monday, students can study at the Student Learning Center all night long. The SLC will be open 24 hours a day, Sunday morning through Friday evening. After 2 a.m., the west side of the building (furthest from the stadium) will close and students will be asked to relocate to the east side.
Univ., Chinese discuss cultures

University students, faculty and government officials from all over Georgia traveled to China to teach Chinese government officials about democracy this summer.
The trip was carried out through the International Center for Democratic Governance under the Carl Vinson Institute of Government and was part of an outreach program.
Latina community enters into Greek life

Not only is Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority the first Latina sorority at the University, it also is considered the first Latina sorority in the country.
Natalia Suarez, the sorority’s president, said the organization was founded nationally in 1975.
She said the 30 year difference between the national founding and the founding at the University was due to a smaller number of Latina students at the time.
Two schools welcome new deans

The University begins the school year with two new deans – Dr. Michael Clutter and Dr. Laura Dunn Jolly.
Clutter was appointed dean of the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and Jolly was selected as dean of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.
