Club helps English students with job search

Though 19 weeks – the average time it takes to complete a job search – may seem like a long time, one club at the University is trying to make sure students make the most of the time.
A new job club for English majors called 19 Weeks allows students to network with peers while learning to identify and research career interests, said Sujata Iyengar, the undergraduate coordinator and faculty adviser for the club.

Univ. researcher links sex and weather

Women who live closer to the equator are more likely to birth baby girls than boys, according to the first global birth-sex ratio study published by a University professor.

Researcher Kristen Navara used data from the CIA World Fact Book through a 10-year period to analyze the statistics of countries’ sex ratios at birth.

UGA faces possible fines for dyeing water

The University may be penalized for polluting Tanyard Creek with paint that was used to line the playing field in Sanford Stadium, according to a state Environmental Protection Division official.

Kevin Chambers, EPD director of communications, said Monday the EPD will decide later this week whether it will impose penalties on the University for polluting the creek.

As darkness hits, so does depression

Winter brings cold weather, less sunlight and, for some people, depression.

For those diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder, depressive symptoms usually begin in late October or early November, and last until the warmer, sunnier days of spring, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Experts expect plentiful peanut yield for Georgia

Georgia, the No. 1 producing peanut state in the U.S., is expecting a record- breaking peanut yield this year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

At the end of harvest, Georgia farmers can expect to have 3,500 pounds of peanuts per acre, according to an October report released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, an agency within the USDA.

Professor’s textbook brings electricity to Malawi

A reception program introduced a University professor to an African man whose life was changed by her textbook – halfway around the world.

William Kamkwamba studied “Using Energy,” a science textbook University professor Mary Atwater wrote, to build a windmill that generated electricity for his family’s house and village for the first time in Malawi.
