Racism emerged on campus last week in a somewhat subtle but nevertheless real way. It all started when The Red & Black published a front page story April 9 about the University paying Soulja Boy $28,000 to perform and agreeing to his contractual demands. I managed to get caught in the midst of it all because I am one of the few black staffers at The Red & Black – and for whatever reason am consulted or criticized by some of my peers every time something concerning race pops into public view at the University.

The “American fragmented family” is in need of repair and strong marriages are part of the solution, said Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears of the Georgia Supreme Court.

“The concept of family is becoming fluid and the net result of family transformations means that more kids will grow up in single-parent households,” Ward said, adding that she related to single parents, having been one at one time.

The University will receive $9 million of the $410 billion pie of federal funds from a spending bill that was signed into law by President Barack Obama earlier this month.

“We are very grateful to representatives Jack Kingston and our senators Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isakson for the support they have given us, in helping to receive this money,” said David Lee, vice president of research for the University.

Every morning students arrive on campus, open up a red bin and grab a copy of The Red & Black on the way to class. But Monday, unknown to the campus, the bins were almost blank. It’s 4 p.m. Sunday at The Red & Black. All the computers are frozen and the server is completely down for hours.

My Blackberry Curve, also known as Pinkberry, is never farther than arms reach and can be found usually in my hand, pocket or purse. We are truly inseparable and have been happily together for almost three months now. And in the future, I may be able to do more on it every day than read The New York Times, check Facebook and send e-mails.

Wall Street needs to mimic Main Street

My heart breaks at reports of low-income families losing their jobs, wondering how they will make ends meet. My heart breaks for middle class families thrown into the street, along with their kids, furniture and the family dog, all because their homes were foreclosed.

Not all residents at fault for vandalism

Burnt elevator buttons and broken signs have become a normal sight when I walk in to Building 1512 of East Campus Village, the place I call home. At this point it doesn’t phase me or my friends – but University Housing has taken notice and now my fellow residents and I may have to suffer.

Opening the newspaper bin Wednesday afternoon, the first thing I noticed was the headline “State may limit access to college,” on the front page of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Eyebrows raised, I kept reading. Tuesday, Erroll B. Davis, chancellor of the University System, said in his State of the University System address that public universities in Georgia may have to “restrict access before we knowingly allow quality to degrade.
