Ex-instructor arrested on child porn charges

A former part-time University instructor was arrested and charged with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a child, according to the Magistrate Court of Athens-Clarke County.
Athens-Clarke County Magistrate Court issued a warrant on Feb. 7 for the arrest of Elton Felix Manzione for possession of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct last January, according to the warrant.
Sexual assault reported Sunday

A female student told Athens-Clarke County Police she was sexually battered Sunday morning, according to the police report.
The victim said she was downtown with friends Saturday night.
She reported leaving downtown at 2:30 a.m. Sunday in a taxi with a friend.
University students found first college Quail Unlimited chapter

They say birds of a feather flock together, and with the existence of organizations such as Ducks Unlimited and the National Wild Turkey Federation on campus, it makes sense that another group devoted to bird conservation wasn’t far behind.
The first collegiate chapter of Quail Unlimited, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation of quail and other wildlife, was founded last year at the University.
Female student reports rape Saturday

A female student told Athens-Clarke County Police early Saturday she may have been raped, according to a police report.
The incident occurred between 9 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.
The 25-year-old said she was restrained and raped against her will by a man named Rico on Evans Street.
Ex-inmate to discuss time on death row

What started as a death sentence for Shareef Cousin turned into a cause that inspires him to share his story.
Cousin, who was found innocent after he had been convicted of murder and sentenced to death, will be speaking at The Chapel at 5:30 p.m. today.
More than 15 years ago, Cousin was found guilty of murder, despite evidence showing he was in another place at the time the crime was committed.
Copyright laws studied by professor

Inspired by his wife’s love of music, a University professor recently completed a major research study on copyright law.
“She really likes all this church music from the turn of the century, and she’d literally wait every year for the clock to tick so she could use works in the public domain,” said Paul Heald, a University professor of law.
East Campus odor still afflicts students, faculty

The infamous East Campus odor remains an annoyance to many University students and staff despite the air filtration system installed in 2005 to alleviate the problem.
The smell is emitted from the water treatment facility on Bailey Street.
“The whole plant smells,” said Jeff Knight, an environmental engineer for Athens Clarke County.

Students, faculty, staff and alumni gathered in the Chapel Thursday afternoon to hear Clifton W. Pannell speak about China while commemorating the founding of the University

College Republicans model Ga. Assembly

If it were up to some University students, Sunday alcohol sales would begin soon.
The College Republicans held a mock General Assembly Wednesday night, allowing students to voice their opinions on issues affecting Georgia.
The resolutions covered the extension of alcohol sales to Sundays, the requirement for voters at polling places to produce an ID and the proposal of a school voucher system for students with special needs in Georgia.
Suicide rate higher in women with implants

Women with breast implants may have a higher-than-average rate of suicide, according to a recent Canadian study. The large study included more than 40,000 women and found that while the suicide rate may be higher for those with breast implants, health risks such as breast cancer, heart disease and other diseases and illnesses are lower [...]
