Over the years numerous bars, including New Earth Music Hall, have entered Athens. ALLISON LOVE/Staff

Only a ghost of Tasty World remains. The Top 40 hits come from speakers rather than a band. At the bar patrons mill around, but the stage no longer hosts the drag kings and queens who were so familiar three years prior. What once was Tasty World — and now is Magnolia’s — has changed. [...]

Institutional fee revenue makes up $32.5 million of the University’s budget. The Red & Black asked multiple University and Board of Regents officials exactly for what the institutional fee paid. They said the fee paid to run the University in general and could not provide specifics. The institutional fee was meant to be only a temporary charge for students, but now the University may not be able to run without it. FILE/the Red & Black

The Board of Regents could decide to decrease student fees by half — but that outcome is unlikely, University officials say. The institutional fee was meant to be a temporary relief to significant educational budget cuts in 2009. But the fee has become an expected part of student charges. At an upcoming meeting in April, the Regents will decide whether [...]

There are not just musicians downtown. There are also those practitioners of the circus arts — and those locals, like members of Canopy Studios, who love to fly on pieces of cloth, thanks to the aerial arts. Lovers of both have started to mingle. Sean taylor/Staff

On Saturdays, Cal Clements sends out the clowns. In College Square, men with leopard print pants juggle while a girl wearing a polka-dot dress hula hoops. Clements swings a long plastic jumping rope and counts out loud as a middle-aged woman nears her 40th jump. “There’s one in the center. Do I hear two?” Clements [...]

The Hunger Games may have begun, but the odds, it seems, are in bigotry’s favor. Suzanne Collins’ wildly popular trilogy, the first part of which was recently released as a movie, deals heavily with the concepts of race, class and societal oppression. Characters live in segregated communities, often in extreme poverty. In the first book, [...]

When Walker Howle begins a new project, several aliases are born along with it. Howle first began attempting a solo project in September, when he courted audiences with intricate electric acoustic instrumentals at The 40 Watt billed as himself. Since then, however, the Dead Confederate guitarist’s name has changed more than his music. “I’ve called [...]

As an initiative to counteract drought, the University has planted about 350 hardwood trees this year. Such efforts helped recognize the campus as a Tree Campus USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

After long hours spent trimming branches, checking soil and relocating hundreds of 10-year-old trees, University grounds keepers can say their labor spent in beautifying campus has borne fruit. The University recently received recognition as a Tree Campus USA, a designation given by the Arbor Day Foundation to colleges with an active program in forestry management. [...]
