Local record label Mantooth Music will mix beats and charity in a rap and hip-hop concert Friday at Tasty World. The show will benefit the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support, a community support group that provides free psychosocial support for those in the community who are dealing with the effects of cancer.

The next time you’re at the 40 Watt supporting the local Athens music scene, take a moment and remember Joker, the only Athens band to be selected as a semifinalist in Boru Vodka’s “Defend the Bar Band” contest. The month-long search for the best unsigned bar band ended with 15 semifinalists.

The idea of roller-skating usually takes college students back to a middle school memory of slowly skating around a rink, holding hands with a special someone and listening to the latest Boyz II Men song plays on speakers.

However, for the Classic City Rollergirls, Athens’ new all female flat track roller derby league, roller-skating is a competitive race where knocking down the opponent is the norm.

T.O.P Dog Program helps students to ‘find their niche’

Whether it is through Greek life or intramural sports leaders of the Training Organization Professionals Dog Program said they will show students how to find a niche during their “Finding Your Place at UGA” presentation Tuesday. Candice Sherman, director of the Center for Leadership and Service, said the workshop will feature a panel of students and advisors to help participants get connected and feel a sense of community through various registered student organizations on campus.

The Seventh Annual Sunflower Music Series will offer today a different spin on plant conservation. Featuring Grogus, winner of the Flagpole Music Award for Best Jazz Band in 2005, the concert will work to educate and entertain the audience, said Connie Cottingham, the special events coordinator at the State Botanical Gardens.
