Jan. 7, 2009.

It’s a date that changed the landscape of Georgia football, if not forever, for a year. It’s one that saw Georgia fans, Georgia coaches and college football say goodbye to Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno.

Stafford, the strong-armed quarterback, and Moreno, the super-stud running back, would both be leaving school early to enter the NFL draft.

Suzanne Yoculan looked around for someone to hug.

She immediately found six (at least) of her gymnasts. Some were crying, some laughing, some both.

They had done it. They had given Yoculan, the 26-year architect of the Georgia gymnastics program, a national championship in her final year as their coach.

The last time Georgia and Texas A&M squared off, it was en route to the Bulldogs’ undefeated 1980 National Championship.

This time around, it will be the final note of a far less memorable season in Athens.

Sunday night Georgia officially accepted a bid to play the Aggies in the Independence Bowl and will travel to Shreveport, La.

Georgia tailback Washaun Ealey was named the SEC Freshman of the Week again Monday, his second such award this season, and second in three weeks.

Ealey, from tiny Stillmore, Ga. (pop. 730) ran for 183 yards Saturday against Georgia Tech, and is now Georgia’s leading rusher with 639 in just eight games.

ATLANTA – For now, it won’t be 7-5 that this Georgia team is remembered for.

It won’t be the 4-4 mark in the SEC.

For now, it will be 30-24. It will be the final score of a win over top-10 rival Georgia Tech.

“We saw the pictures of them with the hedges in their mouths, the pictures of them celebrating on our field, and that was enough to get us motivated,” said Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran.

Reshad Jones redeems poor 2008 game

ATLANTA – Reshad Jones wasn’t going to be a goat again, and he wasn’t going to let Willie Martinez be one either.

The majority of Georgia fans’ fingers were pointed squarely at the Bulldogs’ safety and defensive coordinator after Georgia’s embarrassing loss to Georgia Tech last season – at Jones for “the push,” an ill-fated attempt at shoving Tech running back Roddy Jones out of bounds, and at Martinez, for allowing his team to squander a 28-12 halftime lead.

ATLANTA – With just over three minutes left to play at Bobby Dodd Stadium Saturday, Georgia coach Mark Richt gave a two-fold vote of confidence – he went for the field goal. With his Bulldogs up 30-24, it would be a 55-yard attempt for kicker Blair Walsh. If he made it, it would make it a two-score lead for Georgia.

The game was in hand.

The Bulldogs were trailing Kentucky 34-27 in the fourth quarter, but they were driving. It was third-and-goal on the 1-yard line. They would have a chance to tie.

Georgia called a toss sweep.

Freshman tailback Washaun Ealey fumbled.

MANY SHADES OF RENNIE: Georgia’s Rennie Curran is the most interesting Bulldog in the world

He doesn’t speak French in Russian. He probably doesn’t live vicariously through himself, and isn’t likely to cure narcolepsy just by walking into a room. But he’s Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran. And he’s damn interesting. THE NFL PROSPECT Rennie Curran isn’t getting any taller.

They’re two words that Georgia football fans have grown to hate: leaving early.

Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and Asher Allen all jumped ship in February after their third season in Athens, leaving school early to enter the NFL draft.

Junior Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran isn’t showing his hand just yet (or rather hasn’t made a decision), but it’s something that’s on his mind.
