The University School of Law named former U.S. Sen. Wyche Fowler Jr. the Carl E. Sanders Political Leadership Scholar for spring 2008.

Fowler’s class will focus on how laws are made and how constitutional laws are interpreted in society.

Reusing shoes helps environment

Students in Anne Marie Zimeri’s environmental health science class want their peers’ shoes. They are not looking for Manolo Blahniks or Air Zooms. Instead, they want old athletic shoes for Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program, which recycles them for use in running tracks, basketball and tennis courts, and playgrounds.

Tate II goes ‘green’ without label

Tate II will not be LEED certified, but it should meet or exceed certification requirements anyway, said Project Architect Joe Powell.

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is a rating system for the “greenness” of buildings.

Last year, a group of students petitioned to put Tate II LEED certification as one of the five student priorities for the building.

Univ. continues saving water

Construction on the Tate parking deck provides the Physical Plant with 150 gallons of water a day for irrigation during the drought.

Because of diminishing water sources, virtually all grounds watering stopped and University departments have adopted water-saving initiatives.

DAWGtoberfest health fair offers affordable shots and screenings

The College of Pharmacy brings check-ups out of the doctor’s office and onto campus with its annual health fair DAWGtoberfest.

DAWGtoberfest takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. today at the D.W. Brooks Mall on South Campus.

The fair is “student-led and student-run,” said Academy of Student Pharmacists President Lauryn McCalley.

Drought restricts University water use

University departments around campus, including Ramsey Student Center, the Physical Plant and Food Services, have implemented water-saving initiatives in response to the North Georgia drought.

The University asked its departments “to be sensitive to the drought condition,” said Mitch Gartenberg, director of Ramsey and recreational sports.

Spend spring in Washington

Bar employees face new age restrictions

The Athens-Clarke County Commission voted Tuesday to amend the alcohol ordinance to prohibit anyone under 21 from working as a bartender or doorperson in a bar.

The new age requirement does not apply to restaurant employees.

The Legislative Review Committee, a subcommittee of the commission that worked with the proposed ordinance for the past six months, originally recommended the elevated age requirement and background checks and permits for door people.

University violates county water restrictions

After an extra watering, the grass is a bit perkier on University grounds, especially behind the Student Learning Center.

But under Athens-Clarke County’s level three watering restriction policy, put into effect Aug. 11 , the grass can be watered only between midnight and 10 a.
